•Heat treatment of BLR with Continuous flow reactor removes more hemicellulose.•Hemicellulosic sugar has a negative effect on liquid-lignin separation.•Higher xylose concentration in BLR yields lower liquid-lignin production.•The formation of lignin-carbohydrate bonds causes the low liquid-lignin yield.
