Cocoa breeding must take into account the competitive value of cocoa trees

•Competition creates growth-limiting conditions at a 1333 trees/ha density.•Competition between trees reaches a quarter of the genetic share of production.•Competition impacts first on growth, then on pod production.•High growth and yield are associated with greater inter-tree competition levels.•High production and low competitive behaviour should be a breeding aim.
