Dynamic condensation approach for response-based finite element model updating of large-scale structures

•The vibration equation is reduced into a much smaller one using the dynamic condensation approach.•The response sensitivities are derived directly from the condensed vibration equation.•The developed method takes only 5% computation time of the traditional global approach in model updating.
