Metal concentrations and metallothionein metal detoxification in blue sharks, Prionace glauca L. from the Western North Atlantic Ocean

•Metal contamination and detoxification data for blue shark are notably lacking.•Metals, metallothionein (MT) detoxification and oxidative stress were assessed.•First-time data for Ag, Co, non-radioactive Cs, Sb, Ti and V are reported.•Differential MT detoxification was noted for liver and muscle.•Reduced glutathione defenses are associated with Co and Zn exposure.
