•The ARDES is a valid measure of driver inattention in novice adolescent drivers.•Three factors of the ARDES (control, maneuvering, and navigation) were identified.•The ARDES was correlated with self-report and performance-based attention.•Attention-related driving errors were associated with other driving measures.
