•The mortality rate in ill patients with proximal femoral fracture treated non operatively was 42.8%.•There was no correlation between one year mortality of conservatively treated hip fracture and age, gender, type of fracture or number of comorbidities.•The functional result of hip fractures in ill patients treated non-operatively is poor.
