Abstract
•Externally impacted process was simulated using the Johnson-Cook material model.•Impacting speeds of 100 m/s and 138 m/s were selected for introducing the foreign damage.•Johnson-Cook material model can effectively rebuild the damage evolution.•The external impacting inside railway axles shows a velocity dependence.
