•H-assistant defective MnNb2O6 (D-MNO) with decreased bandgap and increased electronic conductivity.•High reversible capacity of 225 mAh g−1 within 400 cycles under 1 A g−1.•D-MNO owns pseudocapacitive kinetics under high current density without structure degradation.
