Specific microglial phagocytic phenotype and decrease of lipid oxidation in white matter areas during aging: Implications of different microenvironments

•Microglial cells present a specific phagocytic phenotype in white matter areas during aging.•Lipid oxidation is decreased in the corpus callosum of aged mice.•IL-10 overproduction anticipates the age-related microglial phenotype, which is sustained throughout aging without changes.•IL-6 overproduction exacerbates microglial activation in aging.•Neither IL-10 nor IL-6 overexpression modifies brain lipid oxidation associated to aging.
