Abstract
•Three novel phosphonium ionic liquids were synthesized and characterized.•Phosphonium ionic liquids were used to extract Pd(II) from alkaline cyanide solution.•Pd(II) was separated from the mixture metal cyanide using a two-step elution process.•The extraction mechanism was confirmed by NMR, MS, Karl Fischer titration, and DFT.
