•Initial geometric imperfections (GI) make the wrinkling prediction more sensitive.•The wrinkling is more prone to occur under tension-compression stress state.•Increasing normal constraints can effectively reduce wrinkling instability.•Different loading conditions cause the inconsistent effects of the material role on wrinkling.
