Analysis of Cipollino Verde marble wall decoration in Ephesos, Turkey, using geological reconstruction

•Restored slabs of a Cipollino marble wall decoration were reconstructed in Ephesos.•The original sequence of slabs in a restored marble block could be established.•The decoration technique of a Roman hall could be reconstructed.•Sawing and polishing cut-off during slab production could be quantified.
