On the modelling of the peripheral fragmentation during coal char gasification with CO2

•The peripheral fragmentation during the char gasification with CO2 is modelled.•Fragmentation and longitudinal pore growth are considered for the very first time.•Both critical porosity and critical porosity gradient only depend on microstructure.•The variation of particle radius during gasification is predicted.•The increase in temperature favors peripheral fragmentation.
