•Suppression characteristics of compound deflagration by ABC powder were investigated.•30% ABC powder can effectively suppress the compound deflagration flame propagation.•Combination of free radicals and intermediates is the main way of explosion suppression.•Suppression mechanism of ABC powder were discussed systematically.
