•A novel single-sidewall wetting test is developed to study the wetting behavior of melt on the sidewall.•Arc oscillation can promote the wetting behavior of melt.•The effect of arc force and surface tension on the wettability of melt is first established in arc oscillating NG-GTAW.•Excellent wetting of melt on the sidewall contributes to the elimination of lack of fusion.
