•A new mode of hydrothermal mineral replacement reactions has been proposed.•Solid-state diffusion & coupled dissolution-reprecipitation (CDR) operate together.•Surface dissolution induce bulk solid-state diffusion, a mechanism called FI-SSD.•The synergy between FI-SSD & CDR result in complex reaction pathways and textures.•Correct interpretation of mineral texture needs process-specific textural criteria.
