Abstract
•As-cast Mg-xAl-yCa alloys were friction stir processed to disperse intermetallics.•More stable Al-Ca intermetallics were formed in Ca-containing alloys.•Dispersion and fragmentation of intermetallics led to grain refinement in stir zone.•AX43 alloy showed more intense grain refinement compared to the Mg-7Al alloy.
