•Effects of dietary oxytetracycline (OTC) in Oreochromis niloticus were evaluated.•Dietary OTC caused insignificant mortalities and growth retardation.•OTC residue levels never exceeded the MRL set by the Codex Alimentarius.•Dietary OTC reduced the antioxidant capacity of the liver and muscle tissues.•TNF-α, IL-1β and HSP70 genes in the fish liver were down-regulated significantly.
