•The hepatotoxicity of EF was different among SEF, MEF, BEF.•There were no regions specificity in hepatotoxicity of Evodiae Fructus.•Spectrum-effect relationships between fingerprints and hepatotoxicity of Evodiae Fructus were established.•The hepatoprotection of LIM and hepatotoxicity of EVO were experimentally verified.
