Online Vibration Monitoring in Overhead Transmission Lines Based on Distributed Optical Fiber Sensor.

Abstract
In view of the existing problems in the operation of overhead transmission lines, the major cause of the failure in optical fiber composite overhead ground wire (OPGW) can be attributed to the local strain or vibration on the optical fiber. In the paper, a multiparameter coherent distributed optical fiber sensing apparatus is proposed to achieve online vibration monitoring for transmission lines. Experiments indicated the common communication fiber in transmission line may acts as sensor, and the strain and vibration information along the fiber cable can be obtained in real time, which provides a new idea for online monitoring of long distance transmission lines. In order to test the performances in the long-distance vibration monitoring and event identification for transmission lines, the optical fiber sensing apparatus is applied in the outfield environment. Results show that the method is available to advance performances such as measurement distance, spatial resolution and accuracy.
