•IL-17 induced pyroptosis of osteoblasts in vitro.•Il-17 not only promoted the expression of IL-1β and RANKL, but also increased their secretion.•Inhibition of NLRP3 could attenuate pyroptosis in osteoblasts and decrease the release of related cytokines.
