•A study of 1047 US adults assessed intention to receive the COVID-19 vaccine.•Intention to receive a COVID-19 vaccine was related to demographics and greater perceived virus severity.•Intention to receive a COVID-19 vaccine varied with greater perceived general vaccine beliefs and benefits of the COVID-19 vaccine.•Vaccine campaigns will need to incorporate diverse COVID-19 vaccination strategies.
