•Women with high pro-inflammatory parameters have a higher risk of developing DM.•Women with DM have higher substitute insulin resistance indices.•The TyG and TyG-BMI indices were associated with the presence of DM.•TyG and TyG-BMI can be used in clinical practice as good predictors of type 2 DM.
