The synthesis and characterization of a series of chlorine substituted cobalt acetylacetonate complexes, denoted as Co(acac)x(acac-Cl)3-x is presented. The complexes were characterized through spectroscopic techniques?UV?vis, ATR-FTIR, and NMR? and by X-ray crystallography. The replacement of a proton by a chloride was found to have little structural effect in the solid-state structure; however, spectroscopy measurements do definitively support the hypothesis that modifications of this kind can alter observable properties. DFT calculations were performed to examine dipole moments, structural and spectroscopic analysis, and HOMO/LUMO gaps. ? 2021 Elsevier Ltd. All rights reserved.
