Extraction of estrogen hormones from water samples using an aqueous two-phase system: A new approach for sample preparation in the analysis of emerging contaminants

•Aqueous two-phase system was applied as a liquid-liquid extraction technique.•The optimized system was able to partition efficiently five steroidal hormones.•The extraction process was efficient and fast.•Aqueous two-phase system has showed to be cheap and environmentally friendly.
