•Multipurpose cooperatives and farmers companies (FCs) are collective organisation found in Sri Lanka's rice sector.•Cooperatives and FCs have similar control and benefit attributes and different ownership and governance attributes.•FCs are specialised in specific type of rice sold to specific markets.•Government support has been significant for the development of both, cooperatives and FCs.
