•(Bi, S) co-doped ZnO promotes separation rates of photogenerated carriers.•The doping of (Bi, S) significantly increased the content of oxygen vacancies in ZnO.•The optimal doping ratio was 2%, which photocurrent was 4.7 times higher than pure ZnO.
