•Type II pyrethroids specifically adsorb to magnetic molecularly imprinted polymers.•Simulations were employed to screen optimum synthesis conditions.•Imprinted polymer showed good adsorption properties via characterization.•Polymer can act as adsorbent for magnetic solid-phase extraction.•Polymer can be combined with GC–MS to analyze type II pyrethroids in human plasma.
