•LHTESS consists of a shell and horizontally oriented multi-tube heat exchanger•Effect of different HTF inlet temperatures, flow rates during charging and discharging are evaluated in details.•LHTESS showed overall high thermal performance compared to other published results, especially for higher HTF volume flow rates.
