•Mg-bearing ZSM-12 was used as a zeolitic base to immobilize Au nanoparticles.•The zeolite possessed superior basicity and good dispersion of Au nanoparticles.•The catalyst was active in the oxidation of HMF into FDCA with atmospheric O2.•High yield and stable recyclability were obtained under base-free conditions.
