A large scale analysis of threats to the nesting sites of Podocnemis species and the effectiveness of the coverage of these areas by the Brazilian Action Plan for Amazon Turtle Conservation

•Nesting sites are more vulnerable from the eastern to the southwestern Amazon.•Government conservation planning has low coverage of available nesting sites.•Government conservation planning of nesting sites is higher in the vulnerable basins.•Lower Araguaia, Madeira, and Solimões show critical conservation gaps.•Conservations actions should integrate institutions and community participation.
