•Spinnable pitch was prepared by co-carbonization of CTP and BA.•Active oxy-containing groups of bio-asphalt promote the polymerization.•Co-carbonization of CTP and BA could achieve high softening point.•As-prepared pitches showed an excellent spinnability.
