Abstract
Aims & Objectives: Hand hygiene compliance (HHC) among healthcare providers (HCPs) working in Pediatric emergency is often low. We planned this study to document HHC among HCPs working in Pediatric emergency before and after a quality improvement (QI) initiative. Methods: Design: Preintervention and intervention QI study. Setting and participants: Baseline HHC was recorded (May-July 2018) among HCPs [nurses, junior residents (JRs), senior residents (SRs), faculty, and sanitary and hospital attendants) working in 3 different areas [Pediatric emergency, neonatal unit in pediatric emergency (NUPE)-1 and 2], patient’s attendants, and to ‘My five moments of hand hygiene’. Intervention: The QI initiative (August-September 2018) included education and training (small lectures, posters, group discussions, power point presentations), reminders and reinforcement, performance feedback, and PDSA cycle. Primary outcome: HHC before and after QI initiative. Secondary outcomes: HHC in different areas, among different HCPs, and to ‘My five moments of hand hygiene’. Results:: From preintervention to intervention phase, HHC increased from 33% to 54% (OR: 1.696, 95% CI:1.507-1.908, p=0.0001). The HHC also increased in different locations [Pediatric emergency (30% to 46%, p=0.0001), NUPE-1 (36% to 67%, p=0.0001), and NUPE-2 (34% to 47%, p=0.029)]; among different HCPs [nurses (43% to 55%, p=0.007), JRs (21% to 40%, p=0.0001), SRs (33% to 61%, 0.0001), faculty (67% to 73%, p=0.53), sanitary and hospital attendants (23% to 50%, p=0.001)]; patient’s attendants (22% to 53%, p=0.0001); and to ‘My five moments of hand hygiene’. Conclusions: Hand hygiene QI initiative significantly improved HHC rate among HCPs working in different areas of Pediatric emergency.
