Hormonal and carbohydrate control of fruit set in avocado ‘Lamb Hass’. A question of the type of inflorescence?

•In avocado, indeterminate shoots set fewer fruits than determinate ones.•Fruit-set does not depend on the competition for carbohydrates, but on the plant hormone contents.•The larger content of GA1 and tZ in the ovaries of the determinate inflorescences paralleled their higher ability to set.•C7 carbohydrates are accumulated after the physiological fruitlet abscission.•Fruits from indeterminate inflorescences accumulate C7 carbohydrates in a larger amount than those from determinate ones.
