Perceptions of risk and benefit of different foods consumed in Brazil and the optimism about chronic diseases

•Consumers were optimistic regarding their risk of having diabetes, hypertension and gaining weight;•The risk perception for the investigated hazards were driven from perceived risk and benefits of food.•A biased perception of food healthiness and weight gain was observed;•Consumers with higher income, highly educated and without children perceive higher health benefits in food than risks;
