How automated vehicles should operate to avoid fatal crashes with cyclists?

•Safe encounters between highly automated vehicles’ (HAVs) and cyclists are studied.•Five features related to HAVs’ design and operation are defined.•Recognizing the cyclist and following priority rules is the basis for interaction.•HAVs should be able to maintain safe driving patterns and anticipate future situations.•A feature to assess cyclist’s intention is also needed for crash avoidance.
