Abstract
Introduction: The desire to improve physical appearance through simple and economical methods has indiscriminately generated the application of modeling substances and thus the emergence of iatrogenic allogenosis, a disease increasingly prevalent in Latin America.Objective: To describe epidemiological characteristics and adverse effects arising from the use of modeling substances in a group of patients in the city of Cali, Colombia.Materials and methodos: A retrospective review of medical records of patients who came to consultation for complications arising from the use of modeling substances during a six-year period was conducted.Results: 1322 patients were included. 95.5% of patients were women. The ages ranged from 19 to 83 years, with an average of 39 years. The most infiltrated anatomical site with adverse effects by modeling substances were buttocks, asymmetry and increased volume of the infiltrated site were the most common signs, while pain, mood disturbances and depression and/or anxiety were the most perceived symptoms. 41.8% were unknown to the applied substance, 28.5% reported biopolymers; these procedures were mostly performed by unsuitable personnel.Conclusions: The care of these patients requires multidisciplinary teams to establish treatment alternatives seeking to improve their quality of life. In addition to the regulation of establishments and the respective measures of surveillance, inspection and control in the importation and use of these substances
