•[S]/([S]+[Se]) gradient through CZGSSe absorber investigated by GIXRD and GD-OES.•Strong effect of NaF precursor layer thickness on the S distribution through CZGSSe.•Se capping layer before sulfurization modifies S-gradient and Eg of CZGSSe.•Promising efficient wide gap-CZGSSe devices with Eg = 2 eV, Voc = 828 mV and η = 2.7%.
