•A novel bio-based UV-curable coating was prepared from epoxidized vegetable oils.•A facile approach to preparing bio-based organic-inorganic hybrid UV-curable coatings.•The hybrid UV-cured films showed excellent hydrophobic and self-cleaning property.•The UV-curable hydrophobic coating showed great potential for practical applications.
