•High-fidelity heavy truck FE model previously established is improved and certified.•Bridge pier model is validated based on two lateral scaled flexible crash tests.•Refined FE model of a four-span prototype bridge is established.•Linear dependence of maximum dynamic impact force on engine momentum are proposed.
