•MhMIOX2 expression were significantly induced by NaCl.•MhMIOX2 is the gateway for myo-inositol oxidative metabolism.•MhMIOX2 might not be involved in the production of AsA.•MhMIOX2 improved salt tolerance by decreasing oxidative damage and enhancing ROS-scavenging activity.
