Synthesis and structures of compounds [ML6][B10Cl10] (M = Co, Ni; L = CH3CN, DMF, DMSO) as precursors for synthesis of cobalt(II) and nickel(II) complexes with organic L ligands

Synthesis and structures of complexes [ML6][B10Cl10] (M ​= ​Co, Ni; L ​= ​CH3CN, DMF or DMSO) are described. These compounds have been prepared from cobalt (II) chloride or nitrate or nickel (II) chloride and (Et3NH)2 [B10Cl10] in the corresponding solvent (CH3CN, DMF or DMSO). Compounds have been characterized by elemental analysis and IR spectroscopy; single-crystal and powder X-ray diffraction studies were performed for [Co(CH3CN)6][B10Cl10], [Co(DMF)6][B10Cl10], [Co(DMSO)6][B10Cl10] and [Ni(DMSO)6][B10Cl10]. Weak interactions between chlorine atoms of the perchlorated boron cluster and CH, OH groups of solvent molecules can be assumed based on X-ray diffraction data. The compounds have been used as precursors for synthesis of complexes of the corresponding metals with organic ligands. Complexes [Ni(phen)3][B10Cl10] and [Co(phen)3][B10Cl10] have been prepared; [Ni(phen)3][B10Cl10] has been isolated from solution by ligand metathesis and its structure has been characterized by X-ray diffraction, while [Co(phen)3][B10Cl10] with the known structure has been isolated by solid-state synthesis. Cobalt (II) complexes [Co(DMF)6][B10Cl10] and [Co(phen)3][B10Cl10] have been studied by EPR spectroscopy.
