摘要

•AlN crystals of various morphology are obtained by combustion of Al-kC-AlF3-N2 mixture.•The crystals are micro- and nanoplates, dodecagons and six-armed hexagons.•Three chemical pathways for AlN crystals formation are highlighted.•The observed microstructures are validated by a 2D phase-field model.
