Pure or mixed plantings equally enhance the recovery of the Atlantic forest

•Planting trees in pure or mixed stands can equally foster tropical forest recovery.•Both forest structure and functionality can be re-established by pure stands.•Mixed plantings recover taxonomic diversity faster than pure plantings.•In the long-term, pure planted stands do not differ from reference native forests.
