•Coronavirus disease 2019 has postponed the appointment of 98.6% fixed orthodontic patients.•In total, 32.3% patients sustained an orthodontic emergency (OE) while waiting for return-visit.•Bracket/band debonding was the most frequently reported OE during the pandemic.•OE occurrence may worsen the impact of coronavirus disease 2019 on orthodontic duration.
