•Local-heterogeneous laminar structure in WAAMed 2219 leads to the improved stress during deformation.•The θ′ in deposit sample results in high deformation resistance in hot deformation (<380 °C).•DRV acts as the main deformation mechanism and DRX as the auxiliary one.
