•The linear polysaccharide, chitosan (CS), has applications in nanoparticle synthesis.•SiRNA is a genetic tool for suppressing molecular pathways in cancer inhibition.•CS-based nanoarchitectures can be utilized for siRNA delivery in cancer therapy.•SiRNA-loaded CS affects metastasis, and proliferation of cancer cells significantly.•CS nanoparticles can provide a platform for co-delivery of siRNA anti-tumor drugs.
