P-wave indices in Japanese patients with ischemic stroke: Implication of atrial myopathy in subtype of ischemic stroke

•Abnormal P-wave indices indicate a presence of atrial myopathy.•P-wave indices were abnormal in patients with cardioembolic stroke and paroxysmal AF, and also abnormal in patients with lacunar stroke without AF.•Atrial myopathy can be the direct cause of cardioembolic stroke, but it can’t be the direct cause of small vessel occlusion in lacunar stroke.•A mechanistic role of atrial myopathy in lacunar stroke is to be investigated.
