Abstract
The Civil Registry offices are mechanisms of documented representation, in which it is possible to analyze aspects of a society based on them (birth, name, name and gender changes, filiation, naturalness, marriage, civil status, civil capacity, death, stillbirths, etc.). In the exercise of their functions, they establish facts and ensure rights, besides contributing to the development of public policy proposals. From the perspective of Information Science, they are similar to Knowledge Organization Systems that help in the understanding of a certain domain and contexts through their instruments, such as the thesaurus. In order to verify the contributions of the Knowledge Organization Systems to the Civil Registry, a bibliographic survey was carried out in the Database (Annals) of the National Meetings on Research and Post Graduation in Information Science (BENANCIB) and in the Database on Information Science (BRAPCI), with a collection of Brazilian publications in order to quantify which research has already been done on the theme. In order to dialogue and promote new reflections, the Birth Certificate and the terms indicated in reference to women in the Thesaurus for Gender Studies and on Women and in the Legal Thesaurus of the Superior Court of Justice were analyzed. The results involving the Civil Registry Offices in Information Science in Brazil show that there is a representative corpus of society information to be studied. As far as thesaurus elaboration is concerned, they indicate that the contributions prove to be fruitful, for demonstrating the socio-historical instances expressed in the documents.
