普通西瓜均属于二倍体西瓜,用秋水仙碱素溶液处理种子或幼苗,使其染色体加倍为4倍体西瓜,再以4倍体西瓜作为母本,普通西瓜作为父本,杂交以后就得到3倍体西瓜种子。由3倍体西瓜种子长成的植株,由于不可以进行正常的减数分裂而形成可育的配子,因此没有种子,就叫无籽西瓜。这是将细胞遗传学原理
